Biography

Director and stage designer Vasily Barkhatov was born in Moscow in 1983. In 2005, he graduated from the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS) with a degree in Musical Theatre, specializing in directing and actor mastery in musical theatre under the guidance of R. Y. Nemchinskaya.

Among his productions: "The Diary of a Disappeared" at the Moscow theater "Helikon-Opera" (director and artistic stage designer, 2004); the opera diptych "The Director of Music" ("First the Music, Then the Words" by Salieri and "The Impresario" by Mozart, director and artistic stage designer) at the Rostov State Musical Theater (2004); the drama "The Robbers" at the A. S. Pushkin Moscow Drama Theatre (2009); the musical "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" at the "Karambol" Theatre; "Die Fledermaus" by Johann Strauss II at the Bolshoi Theatre (2010) and "Deceit and Love" at the "Actor's Shelter" Theatre (2011), "Eugene Onegin" by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky at the Lithuanian National Opera (2012), "The New Sufferings of Young W." at the A. P. Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre (2012), the film "Atomic Ivan" (2011), "The Flying Dutchman" by Richard Wagner at the Mikhailovsky Theatre (2013).

He has worked extensively at the Mariinsky Theatre: operetta "Moscow, Cheryomushki" by Dmitry Shostakovich (director and artistic stage designer, 2006), operas "Jenufa" by Leoš Janáček (2007), "Benvenuto Cellini" by Hector Berlioz (2007), "Otello" by Giuseppe Verdi (2007), "The Brothers Karamazov" by Alexey Smelkov (2008), "Dead Souls" by Rodion Shchedrin (2011), and "The Tales of Hoffmann" by Jacques Offenbach (2011).

Among Barkhatov's productions abroad are "Khovanshchina" by Modest Mussorgsky (2015) and "Madama Butterfly" by Giacomo Puccini (2019) at the Theater Basel, "Soldaten" by Bernd Alois Zimmermann at the Hessian State Theatre in Wiesbaden (2016), "Invisible" by Alexander Raskatov at the German State Opera in Berlin (2017, world premiere), "The Girl of the Golden West" by Giacomo Puccini at the Hungarian State Opera (2018), "Eugene Onegin" at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm (2018), "Tosca" by Giacomo Puccini at the Hanover Opera (2019), "The Gambler" by Sergei Prokofiev at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre (2020).

In 2013-2014, Barkhatov served as the artistic director of the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.

Vasily Barkhatov has been repeatedly nominated for the Golden Mask theatre award. His operatic production of "Dead Souls," staged in 2011 at the Mariinsky Theatre, was awarded the highest theatre prize of St. Petersburg, the "Golden Soffit." In 2019, he was nominated for the International Opera Awards as the best opera director.
